Infrared exiting the only lock and entering the St. Peters Canal, the southern access to the Bras D'Or Lakes. This canal is only about ½ mile long and the lock is not needed because of an elevation difference (the Bras d'Or Lakes are are really part of the sea), but to control what would be a huge tidal current. It dates to the same period of North American canal building in the early to mid 1800's that produced the Erie Canal and the canal along the Potomac (C & O Canal?). It took 15 years to blast through the solid granite, finally opening in 1869. Considering that the only other entry to the Lakes is from the northern waters, this has been a huge gain in access. Now, it's rare to see anything other than pleasure boats using the canal.
